Behind the Brand – Sophie Buck

In our second edition of ‘Behind the Brand’, we’re chatting to Sophie Buck. Sophie joined us at the beginning of 2016 to relaunch our recruitment division and has had a huge impact on the business in a short space of time. Sophie has worked in FM recruitment since 2012, prior to which she cut her teeth in the fast-paced world of high street recruitment. She’s also spent time as an NVQ assessor and in retail.

What made you choose FM as a career?

As a recruiter for many years, FM appealed to me as its growth as a sector of choice has been huge. The FM sector is people focused which is what I am all about so it suits me very well!

What does it take to be successful in FM?

To be people focused, an excellent listener, problem solver and have a ‘can do’ attitude.

What are the most enjoyable aspects of your job?

Working with like minded people who want to make a difference and pride themselves on exceptional service.

What aspects of your job didn’t you expect?

How interesting the sector is!!! Who’d have thought managing/maintaining and updating buildings and  buildings could be so fascinating!

What are your predictions for the FM industry beyond 2017?

Wellbeing in the workplace will continue to be in the spotlight throughout 2017

FM talent shortage will become more of an issue forcing employers/recruiters to look into other industry sectors.

What do you wish you had known about the industry before you joined?

Nothing! It’s good to not have any preconceived ideas and that allows me to keep my approach to recruitment within the sector fresh

What was your first job?

Whilst at school I worked in a newsagent and hair salon washing hair and taking out perm rods!

Who has influenced your career most and why?

My mother. She worked hard to provide for my brother and I and has shown me that you can do anything you put your mind to. I admire her hugely.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

To be myself

What is the skill you would most like to have?

To be able to read minds

What is on your desk?

Laptop, mobile phone, pad & pen and a mug

What are you passionate about?

People! Especially my family!

Karren Brady – She’s a strong, inspirational woman

Describe your perfect day away from work.

Going out for breakfast, long walk in the sunshine with my dog, my partner and my daughter. Followed by a good movie and good food!

What is your greatest work achievement?

Playing a part in changing the lives of the candidates I work with in finding a new career opportunity.

What is your favourite quote/motto?

Don’t think I have one!!

What is the best/worst quality in a leader?

A leader will inspire you to think creatively and allow you to grow. The worst thing is not being led but managed.

What can’t you live without?

Chocolate…what a cliché!

What are your Career ambitions?

To keep making a difference to peoples careers and in years to come, have my own shop selling fresh flowers and other pretty things!
